In today's world, protection for our families is more important than ever. An area of concern for Copper Canyon is the town’s police protection. Copper Canyon had three officers contracted from the Denton County Sheriff's department a few years ago but was reduced for budgetary reasons. The previous council found the lack of coverage to be unacceptable. After consultation with the Sheriff’s department, the last town council passed additional funding to ensure the town would be better protected.
Since the program passed, no positive action has been taken to implement the additional coverage. Even though a couple of meetings between town staff and the sheriff's department have taken place, they have not been able to execute this critical safety program for our town. Any answer other than “Let’s get it done” is unacceptable.
Safety and protection are the areas that should NOT be allowed to be cut from the budget. Answers like “Well, we just can’t do that” or “we just don’t have the people” are unacceptable when protecting your family. Off-duty officers are always volunteering to perform extra duty. We applaud those officers for stepping up to protect our community. Town leadership's failure is that we do not have enough coverage of trained police officers working for you. Ensure you know who will return Copper Canyon back to the proper police coverage you deserve.
